What Is a Laser Bone Graft?

A laser bone graft combines traditional bone grafting materials with laser-assisted surgery to regenerate jawbone that has deteriorated due to tooth loss, gum disease, or injury. The procedure involves placing bone graft material into areas with decreased bone density, while a dental laser stimulates the surrounding tissue to promote healing and new bone growth.

According to the American Academy of Implant Dentistry, patients can lose up to 25% of bone in an affected area within just three months of losing a tooth. This bone loss can impact facial structure, compromise neighboring teeth, and make future dental restorations more difficult. Laser bone grafting addresses these concerns by encouraging the body to naturally regenerate bone tissue.

How Laser Technology Improves Bone Grafting

The use of laser technology in bone grafting procedures offers several advantages over conventional surgical techniques. Lasers provide greater precision, which means less trauma to surrounding tissues and reduced bleeding during the procedure. Patients typically experience less swelling and discomfort during recovery, and the laser energy helps stimulate cellular activity, accelerating the healing process. Many patients return to their normal routines more quickly than they would after traditional bone grafting surgery.

The Laser Bone Graft Procedure

The process begins with a comprehensive consultation, including advanced imaging using dental CT scan technology. This detailed imaging allows Dr. Goetz to assess bone density, identify the precise areas requiring treatment, and plan the procedure with accuracy.

During Your Appointment

On the day of the procedure, local anesthesia keeps patients comfortable throughout the treatment. The dental laser creates a small opening in the gum tissue, exposing the area where bone graft material will be placed. The graft material, which may come from synthetic sources, donor tissue, or the patient’s own bone, fills the deficient area.

The laser then helps seal the treatment site and stimulates the surrounding cells to begin the regeneration process. Most laser bone graft procedures take between 45 minutes and an hour, depending on the extent of treatment needed.

Recovery and Healing

Recovery from laser bone grafting tends to be smoother than traditional methods. Patients receive detailed aftercare instructions and may take over-the-counter pain relievers to manage any mild discomfort. Swelling typically subsides within a few days, and most patients feel comfortable returning to work and daily activities within 24 to 48 hours. The bone itself takes several months to fully integrate and strengthen, during which time follow-up appointments monitor progress and healing.

Procedure & Diagnosis

STEP 1

The first step is to make a comprehensive consultation with Dr. Goetz. This initial visit, which includes oral cancer screening, x-rays and a general evaluation of your mouth will allow the doctor to diagnose what’s going in your mouth.

If you need a dental implant because you need to restore a tooth, the doctor need s to evaluate if the jaw bone is strong enough to support the dental implant or screw that will support your new dental crown. At this stage, the doctor will be able to tell you if you need (or not) a bone grafting procedure

STEP 2

In case you need to grow bone before your implant treatment you do not need to worry since bone grafting is a very simple surgical procedure. Your mouth will be numbed with anesthesia to avoid pain or discomfort.

STEP 3

Generally, the doctor makes an incision in the jaw to insert bone graft materials that will gradually heal, grow and replace missing tissues.

STEP 4

Depending on the amount of missing bone, the doctor will perform different bone grafting techniques. Also, the healing period before the placement of the dental implant will vary as every patient’s mouth is different.

FAQs

Bone graft FAQs

Every patient and every mouth is different. The size of the bone graft and the particular ability of each organism to recover will determine the period you need for bone graft recovery. Generally, it can take from 2 weeks to several months for the area to heal and recover.

Bone graft is generally not painful. Local anesthesia will be used since the doctor needs to cut a part of your jaw to allocate the new bone composite, but of all dental treatments, today bone graft has become a simple painless treatment.

There are different techniques for bone graft. In Autograft the bone is taken from another part of your body, preferably the back jaw. In Allograft the bone comes from a dead person or animal. Synthetic Bone Graft is the type of graft by which synthetic bone is created for the specific location.

No. As said before, bone graft simply requires local anesthesia, although each patient and case is different.
