What Are Dental Crowns and Bridges?

Dental crowns are custom-made caps that fit over a damaged tooth to restore its shape, size, and strength. They can strengthen teeth with large cavities when there is not enough healthy tooth structure remaining for a filling, protect teeth that have been weakened by decay or cracks, restore broken or worn teeth, and cover teeth following a root canal. Dental bridges, on the other hand, are used to replace one or more missing teeth. A bridge consists of crowns placed on the teeth on either side of the gap — called abutment teeth — with an artificial tooth, called a pontic, in between. The result is a fixed, non-removable restoration that fills the gap and restores function.

Dental Implant Treatments We Offer

Whether you need a single crown to protect a damaged tooth or a bridge to replace one or more missing teeth, Dr. Goetz designs every restoration around your bite, your adjacent teeth, and your long-term oral health.

Porcelain Crowns

Porcelain and ceramic crowns are the most natural-looking option, matching your surrounding teeth in color and translucency. They are ideal for front teeth and visible areas. Full porcelain crowns have no dark metal base, so there is no gray line at the gum line even if gum tissue recedes over time.

Dental Bridges

When a missing tooth is replaced with an implant, the visible crown on top is custom-fabricated to match your natural teeth. Implant-supported bridges use implants as anchor points instead of grinding down adjacent healthy teeth — providing a more conservative, long-lasting solution for replacing multiple missing teeth in a row.

Implant-Supported Crowns & Bridges

Sometimes a tooth is too short to support a crown properly. Crown lengthening is a minor surgical procedure that reshapes gum and bone tissue to expose more of the tooth structure, allowing a crown to be placed securely. Dr. Goetz coordinates preparatory procedures like crown lengthening or bone grafting when needed before fabricating the final restoration.

All-on-X and Implant-Supported Dentures

All restorations at Ocean Breeze — whether bridges or implant-supported options — are designed to function like natural teeth. You may be a good candidate if you have a cracked, broken, or decayed tooth that can’t be adequately restored with a filling; a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment; a missing tooth you want to replace without a removable partial denture; or multiple missing teeth in a row that could be spanned with a bridge.

Meet Dr. Nicholas Goetz

Crown and bridge restorations look straightforward but require precise planning — shade matching, bite alignment, margin fit, and proper contour all affect how a restoration performs and how long it lasts. Dr. Nicholas Goetz holds a DMD and MS from the University of Florida, completed his Prosthodontic Residency at UF, and went on to complete a Maxillofacial Prosthodontics Fellowship at UCLA.

He is one of approximately 150 board-certified maxillofacial prosthodontists in the United States, with clinical experience from U.S. Army and VA Medical Hospital settings. Prosthodontists specialize in restoring and replacing teeth — crown and bridge work is the foundation of the specialty. For patients at Ocean Breeze, every restoration is designed with the full picture in mind: not just the tooth being treated, but the bite, the surrounding teeth, and long-term durability.

Your Crown & Bridge Treatment, Step by Step

1

Consultation & Tooth Preparation

At your first appointment, Dr. Goetz examines the tooth, takes X-rays, and confirms the crown or bridge plan. The tooth is prepared by removing a small amount of enamel around the circumference to create space for the restoration. For a bridge, the abutment teeth on either side of the gap are prepared the same way. Precise impressions are taken and sent to the dental lab. A temporary crown or bridge is placed to protect the prepared teeth while your permanent restoration is being fabricated.
2

Impressions & Temporary Restoration

Once the molds have been taken, your porcelain crown or bridge will be custom-created in a dental laboratory over approximately two weeks. During this period, you will wear the temporary restoration to protect the prepared teeth. The lab fabricates the restoration to match the exact color, shape, and contour specified by Dr. Goetz.
3

Lab Fabrication

Your permanent restoration is fabricated in a dental lab from your impressions and shade mapping. The lab creates the crown or bridge to match the exact color, translucency, and contour of your surrounding teeth. This stage takes approximately one to two weeks. Your temporary restoration protects the prepared teeth in the meantime.
4

Final Placement & Bite Check

At your second appointment, the temporary restoration is removed and the prepared teeth are cleaned. The new crown or bridge is carefully test-fitted before final cementation. Dr. Goetz checks the fit, bite, and color carefully — making any minor adjustments needed before permanently cementing the restoration in place. Most patients leave with a fully restored smile the same day.

FAQs

Crown & Bridge FAQs

How long will the implant post and crown last?
The cost of crown and bridge treatment varies based on several factors — the number of teeth being treated, the materials selected, and the complexity of your case. During your consultation, Dr. Goetz will provide a detailed treatment plan with transparent pricing before any work begins. Financing options are available.
With proper care, porcelain crowns typically last 15 years or longer. The longevity depends on bite forces, oral hygiene habits, and whether you grind your teeth. A dental bridge, supported by healthy abutment teeth, has a similar lifespan when cared for properly. Dr. Goetz will advise you on what to expect for your specific restoration.
You may be a good candidate if you have a cracked, broken, or decayed tooth; a tooth that has undergone root canal treatment; a missing tooth you want to replace without a removable partial; or multiple missing teeth in a row that could be spanned with a bridge. A comprehensive exam will confirm whether a crown, bridge, or alternative option is the right fit.
Maintaining your crown or bridge requires the same care as natural teeth — brush twice daily with a soft-bristled toothbrush and floss carefully around the restoration. Pay special attention to flossing under a bridge, using a floss threader or interdental brush to clean between the pontic and gumline. Regular professional cleanings every 6 months help monitor the restoration and surrounding tissue. With proper care, a well-placed crown or bridge typically lasts 15 years or longer.
Coverage varies by plan. Most dental insurance plans cover a portion of crown and bridge treatment when it is clinically necessary — for example, after decay or root canal treatment. Cosmetic crown replacements are typically not covered. While we are a fee-for-service practice, we work with PPO plans as out-of-network providers and file claims on your behalf to maximize your reimbursement.
